Q: What’s your favorite thing about alumni programming?
A: My favorite thing about alumni programming is that it has a lot of diversity and allows people with similar lived experiences to connect. I love that in alumni there are groups that are meaningful to many different populations. Everyone is there because they want to be there and it is a very supportive environment.
Q: What are your favorite groups and why?
A: My favorite groups are the Helping Professionals group because I work in the mental health field myself and I find it really empowering and important to connect with others who are also helping professionals on their own mental health journey. I find the space very refreshing because I love helping others in my work but I sometimes need to reach out for support for myself. It has helped remind me that I need to help myself so I can effectively help others. I also love the Chronic Illness group. I live with a variety of chronic health conditions and that group gives me a non-clinical space to discuss what’s going on with my health, and have support from others who live with chronic illness. I’ve made great connections in that group and have been able to practice advocacy and holding space for others. I also love Neurodivergent group. I am a late diagnosed neurodivergent person and having a space where I can discuss my struggles as well as my wins has been incredibly helpful. I enjoy connecting with other people who relate to my narrative and I can unmask around. In all these groups I have felt like I can show up exactly how I am and there is no judgement.
Q: What would you say to someone who’s thinking about joining alumni programming?
A: I would tell someone who is thinking about joining alumni to take the leap and try it. There are so many groups the program has to offer. There really is something for everyone. Alumni is a supportive and non-judgmental space where I’ve made some amazing connections. If you are nervous about trying your first group, remember all of us were new at some point and you are free to come as you are.
